I've been an avid listener to his music for a number of years now, from the early Star Ocean days on the SNES to the more recent compilations of Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria and there is one major thought on my mind.
I've noticed that about the time Star Ocean 3 was created, it seems Mr. Sakuraba developed a more Jazz-emphasis on his style of music. As much as I like this style, it makes me kind of sad to miss the old style with Synth Beat emphasis especially for the games of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, and Star Ocean: The Second Story, both of which were extremely energetic and something one could dance to! Also I liked the music from the Gameboy Color game Star Ocean: Blue Sphere. Golden Sun series also comes to mind.
I understand that back in the days of Super Nintendo and possibly Sony Playstation, real instruments in game music weren't exactly possible, but somehow Mr. Sakuraba pulled off some very 'outer-space' synth tones and really drew out the imagination with his music. Even the symphonic music that would normally sound more or less unnatural, felt more natural with the synth and beats to it, especially songs like 'Turn over a New Leaf' and 'Take a Flight'.
I'm just wondering if by chance he ever returns to that synth style once in a while for some of his compositions? There's been a new trend in music lately referred to as "Chiptunes" where the music is all synth based on the NES/SNES/Genesis Soundboards. And if anything Mr. Sakuraba excels in that style of music. I just wish to hear more of that again, possibly.
