pretty funny how lacking the game is without Sakimoto's compositions:

Now the question is, who in the world composed it? Stylistically it doesn't match up with any of Square's (active) composition sound staff of the time...
I've got the urge to say Hamaguchi for some reason. No clue, though.

I think it's just some stock music...

Vagrant Story is inseparable from its music.
I don't think I ever played a game in which the music fit so well.

I might argue that some kept playing FOR the music (I did for a time). And the music sounds very stock/generic to me, like in early movie trailers there are a handful of hollywood stock themes they play over them.

What happens to me is that if I listen to the OST, I go right back to playing the game. I go to the locations with the best music, and then I continue listening to the soundtrack afterwards, which leads to one big cycle. So, I do play for the music and the way how said events tie into the music.
Of course, it's just a damn good game. :D
