Probably one of the most anticipated soundtracks of the year so far, the Valkyrie Profile 2 - Silmeria Original Soundtrack will feature Motoi Sakuraba's talents once again. Like all of his recent soundtrack releases (except Tales of the Abyss), the album will be published under his Japanese promoter, TEAM Entertainment, with the catalogue number KDSD-00102~3. On sale July 12. :)

Thoughts? Personally, I NEED to get my hands on this. While I did prefer Sakuraba's music to Star Ocean 2 at the period of time when Valkyrie Profile was released, the latter did have some high quality moments. Here's hoping Square Enix pitched in some funds to help tri-Ace and possibly make use of an orchestra at the least. I assume that the sound portion of Valkyrie Profile 2 - Silmeria is taken care of by Hiroya Hatsushiba and tri-Crescendo?

Sakuraba's been pretty busy the past couple of months, hasn't he? What with working on Tales of the Abyss, Baten Kaitos 2, and Valkyrie Profile 2 (and possibly others that I don't know about). Hopefully he'll be able to relax a bit after this, although I know his schedule is usually pretty hectic.

Anyway, I've never heard the soundtrack to the first Valkyrie Profile, but I'm probably gonna pick it up sometime in the next couple of months now that it's been reprinted, since I'm planning to get the Baten Kaitos II soundtrack anyway (judging by the couple of samples I've heard it sounds pretty good). Also, to go off topic a bit, I'm extremely happy that the Final Fantasy Tactics OST has been reprinted since I've been wanting to get that for a long time. It's really a pitty when some of the best videogame soundtracks go out of print (and some never get a reprint).

Seems like the Valkyrie Profile 2 - Silmeria Original Soundtrack will be split into separate volumes (like Star Ocean 3). Why does TEAM always want to consume our money with their expensive but excellent stock? ;_;

Re: Sakuraba being busy, if by "past couple of months" you refer to the last one and a half decade you are right. He prefers composing over doing nothing as stated in a QA (third Q from May 20th, 2005 in particular) (http://ms-motion.com/history/History_e.html).

Re: Splitting into separate volumes I guess tri-Ace likes to do that (they list all their soundtracks on their website's products page). Also since it is not new and was done with Star Ocean 3 as well I guess people can now specifically pick the part they really want...

I guess I should have said "busier than usual." I know he's always busy, but I don't recall him ever working on three VG soundtracks (and pretty big soundtracks at that) at a time. Someone who's been following him longer than I have could probably prove me wrong though.

Sure, if you look at his gameography (http://www.cocoebiz.com/sakuraba/discography/games.shtml), you'll see he has done it plenty of times. :)

I hate when they do that. Just release the whole thing at once and be done with it. If they're going to do it like SO3 again, I may wait to find out which release has the orchestra music on it so I can skip it (still suffering bad memories of SO3 v1).

Really? I loved Volume 1 just as much as the second. Sometimes I don't get why people disregard Volume 1 and praise the second volume, while the latter has more filler and more worthless pieces (of course, it's not without its gems). Is Star Ocean 3 Volume 1 really that bad? Sure, the pieces aren't professionally orchestrated by an orchestrator (why bother when Sakuraba is capable at doing so at the least) but the material is still very much good.

If TEAM prints the Valkyrie Profile 2 OST like they did with Star Ocean, I'd be both disappointed and happy. Although it's nice to have an entire soundtrack one style predominantly, this also leaves a lack of stylistic variation. Of course, having both volumes also completes the experience.

We see again that some people liked the first and some other liked the second better so I guess the separation did make sense after all. =P

This reminds me, why didn't Sakimoto orchestrate his own pieces in FF12? He's composing in orchestral style anyway after all...? (I know I should put that into his thread and not here... =P)

Heh, probably wasn't satisfied with his orchestration of "Staff Roll" from Vagrant Story. :p

If he truly orchestrated it... I'd really like to know that.

Concerning Star Ocean 3, I love both volumes (Sakuraba's best work, I think) but I don't see what is so awful about volume 1. To me, these orchestral pieces are way better than Baten Kaitos... BK is nice too, but to me it can't compete with SO3. I have really high expectations for VP2.

I'll say it again. I own SO3 OST1...and not 2. My only other Sakura soundtrack is Tales of Destiny.

Neither the in-game staff list (http://www.snesmusic.org/motoisakuraba/static/Star_Ocean_Till_the_End_of_Time_Staff.html) nor the info and liner notes (http://chudahs-corner.com/liners/index.php?catalog=KDSD-00002~3) in the soundtrack itself suggest otherwise.

Sakuraba's Japanese MS-Motion website was updated with a new photo page (http://ms-motion.com/2006/6/2006%2006%2004.html) of the concert, no English/Italian translation is available of that yet.

There were no cameras at the event so a DVD is (again) not going to happen this time.

Another minor update: Valkyrie Profile 2 OST Vol.1 will bare a subtitle 'Alicia Side'. The first print of the soundtrack will receive a special cardboard box to hold the 3 albums in (Vol.1, Vol.2 and the Arrange Album (Vol.3)).

You mean the four albums (Vol.1, Vol.2 and Arrange and Voice Mix Albums), like with Star Ocean 3?

But can't wait to hear this, hopefully Sakuraba will manages to top the original Valkyrie Profile score, which is for the still the best Sakuraba score.

The Voice Mix isn't included as an official Volume, according to TEAM. It's only Vol.1, Vol.2 and Arrange. However, it's not confirmed for sure if it will hold the Voice Mix.

That's weird. But Voice Mix is coming right after Arrange, so it would be logical that it would be included as official volume, but we will know soon. :P

But still, July~August months are just plain and simple 'owned' by Sakuraba, four albums and total of 6 cd's coming up. Too bad that there's plenty of other good albums coming too. Oh well, who needs money anyway.

Yeah, it would seem logical, however, I will soon know for sure if it is an official volume. Datschge might know a bit more regarding this issue.

Sakuraba definitely has the works going on in this year. Star Ocean 3 is his biggest works to date, but let's see if VP2 outdoes it in it's tracks. It's surely going to be a great soundtrack (and of course with Square Enix's financial support, we'll see the return of the orchestra again).

As for a CD of the live concert I'd personally say it's unlikely, but who knows.

The track list of VP 1&2 SOUND PROFILE CD is below.
As you know, it's attached with the limited edition of Valkyrie Profiles 2 -Silmeria-.

1 To the Living Ground?(永らえたる地へ)
2 Purse The Awful Mistery
3 Celestial Troupe
4 Never Surrender
5 To the Unhallowed Ground(不浄なる地へ)
6 Doorway to Heaven(天空の扉 )
7 Fighting the Shadowy Gods(未確認神闘シンドローム)
8 Distortions in the Void of Despair(奈落の底にある歪曲)
9 Confidence in the domination
10 Take a flight -ver.LENNETH-(BONUS TRACK)
11 The Sky Was High Above(BONUS TRACK)

Track 1-4 are from VP2
Track 5-9 are from VP1
Track10 is opening track from VP1 for PSP and arranged by Kēichi Okabe
Track11 was TV commercial song of VP1 and arranged by Takumi Iwasaki

Needless to say, this CD is not worth a cent for many.

Now, I haven't ever been interested in Sakuraba so much, but with regard to VP2, I can dig it.
This time he seems to feature Orchestra and Trad, rather than Progressive Rock.
However, I don't know if Sakuraba fans dig his new work, and actually I have seen many say "unmemorable".

Then, sound quality was...so wonderful I was amazed a bit because Sakuraba(and Tamura) composed sort of poor music for Tales of the Abyss which still adopted streaming music.
When I heard the music for Dipan(a castle town), I wondered if those strings and winds were performed live.

I hear VP2 features VP1 and SO music in game: Rumor says that after second play we can change battle music by pushing L2 or R2 button every encounter, and among them there are a piano or even PSG(NES sound) arrange of past battle music.

Are there any formal English track names of VP1 music? Anyway, if I translate "未確認神闘シンドローム", then it's "Syndrome of Unidentified Fighting Gods" or so. However, it's called, or officially translated as "Fighting the Shadowy Gods" abroad, and indeed it seems better for many.
This time the track names are less difficult than VP1 which featured epidictic combination of Chinese characters like Revolutionary Girl Utena(JP Anime), but still my poor vocabulary hardly can express the implication of original names(Actually, perhapes Track 15 used Chinese).

Regarding translation, someone(even babelfish) can do far better. I tried, though:

Disc 1
02. To the Eternal Ground
03. Selectable Bustle
10. Break with Peace
11. Undistracted Rebellion Spirit
12. Under Great Divine Protection
13. Shine to be Blessed
14. Shadow talking with Darkness
15. Inenarrable Melancholy
16. Calm and Trace of Sun
20. Meditation of Many Years

Disc 2
02. Exile
04. Mundanity anchored by Thoughts
07. Invading Suspiciousness
08. Grief from Wisdom
09. Unreturn of Idea
11. Fault breeding Fault
12. Lambency of Atavism
13. Death hoping Life, and Life hoping Death
15. Chance turing into Necessity

EDIT:
Well, I'll edit this in future after browsing other pages and see how track names are translated in English.
It's shameful, but I don't know for example, how I shorten "A Shadow who's talking with Darkness" or "A death who hopes to live, and A life who hopes to die" as smart track names.

Sakuraba himself actually never gives titles to his songs. The people who name them (which are not known for sure. Gotanda for tri-Ace? Hatsushiba and other sound staff for tri-Crescendo? Kikuchi for Tales Studio?) somehow seem to keep making fun of previous track names across the board by doing somewhat silly variations. Considering the overall number of tracks it's probably no surprise. =p

MDBG (which I recommend for Chinese) says tender / soft (http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=worddict&wdqchi=%E5%AB%A9&wdrst=1&wdqchim=0&wdqchie=UTF-8&wddmtm=0). A kanji dictionary says young / weak (http://spencer.blackmarket.net/dic_word_detail.asp?id=389962) though...

It's confusing. I knew we can read it as "Futaba" in Japanese, but yes, it woundn't be the same as "双葉(cotyledon)"...

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a very creative name for a short "faint" jingle or something like that. =p
