View Full Version : Moonlit Shadow Discussion
I just received the cd a week ago and I must say that I was thrilled to hear a different side of Mitsuda's musical talent. I'm also enjoying Miki Higashino's work as well. Be sure to check out a tune she features on her website (www.miki-higashino.com).
So what are your thoughts and impressions about the soundtrack?
I'm sure some of you have picked this up. Any impressions at all? :?

I only got it recently and haven't been listening to it that much; I'll listen to it some more, and then drop my commentary.

I am very interested in this release, and as soon as I have a bit of money to spare, I will certainly be looking into it. Then I will return here for discussion. :D

I was suprised as well..
Because the themes and overall dynamics of these new tunes are low standards compared to Yasunoris previous works.. Im dissapointed, but thats my point of view..
Of course it might be refreshing to some..
I dont like this style..

I enjoy Mitsuda jazz, so this is right up my alley. It sounds so classy and urban. That's not to say anything disparaging about Miki Higashino, the work she did on this was very good as well.
"Moonlit Shadow" is a perfect opening track.
"Smooth Blues" and "Junk! Junk! Junk!" are pretty decent and intelligent and sophisticated for fully vocal rap songs, and the lyrics are good. Some of them, I can't hear, and wish they included them in the insert. (And, I don't usually like rap, but these two tracks were actually two rather pleasant surprises. Two rap songs I like, Yay for Miss Miki Higashino!)
"Maximum High Speed," "D.O.L.L.," "Cool Sky," "Urban Fantasy," "Jungle City" all conjure images of either cruising or walking around a classy urban city-scape.
"Joni Scott Club," sounds like a theme for a depressed slums, even though the title suggests that it's really a theme for say, an up-scale club resort.
"Illegal Messenger," and "Hit Man" are very action-packed themes, that conjure images of maybe running around a dilipdated building, either running from the authorities, or trying to catch a criminal, and could also easily back fight scenes.
"Asian Kung-Fu Foundation" sounds definitely like a fight scene theme, and the rapping in the background is also a good touch, too.
"Red Shot" and "Au Revoir dans La Nuit de Clair de Lune" are two very classy, yet very urgent sounding possibly fight scene themes.
"Striking Distance," "One Note Blues," and "Target" sound like victory themes, like you just came back from a mission.
"Blue Moon" sounds like an ending theme, and is just a very sad, yearning, mournful piece. The sax and piano are both beautiful. I love the haunting, echoing sound of the saxophone in this piece.
"Maria" sounds like a second ending theme, and is also very solemn, consisting only of an opera voice.
All in all, it's a very intelligent, sophisticated composed soundtrack, and is very gangster. I like!
That was a very informative review of Moonlit Shadow. Thanks Karizuma for that...and yes, it was quite gangster.

I finally got around to listening through this one and I'm not impressed. It's decent, but that's it.

What is Moonlit Shadow..?
You can tell me by email, if you'd like..
Thank you very much! :)
Moonlit Shadow is the soundtrack to the ps2 game "Tsuyoki ni Saraba," which is a joint project between Yasunori Mitsuda and Miki Higashino.

Hey everyone. Remember a while ago cocoebiz was running a contest for "Moonlit Shadow". Well, I won the autographed CD!!!!! (Check out the photo of Mitsuda-san signing it on the main page). I just received the email from the administrator asking me to confirm my mailing address. Man, I can't believe my name was chosen... I never used to win stuff like this, but since becoming a Mitsuda fan I've won twice now on this site. A while back I won a "Mitsuda Museum" tote bag - prize A for the "Hako no Niwa" contest. Well, I just wanted to let everyone know how cool cocoebiz is for holding drawings like this. Thank you cocoebiz and Yasunori Mitsuda! I'm truly grateful. I can't wait to get the CD in the mail!

Hey Fatigue. Yeah, I've been wanting to hear Duel Saga for a while. I wish OSTs weren't so expensive! I think I've heard every major soundtrack that Mitsuda has worked on alone (or did the bulk of the tracks), plus Gun Hazard and Shadow Hearts. I still need to hear Shadow Hearts 2, Tobal No.1, Mario Party...plus all of his stuff for arranged albums like Dark Chronicle Premium Arrange, 2197, the Street Fighter Tribute Album, ahhhhhh!!! There is so much out there, and I have so little cash!! lol!!!!
Anyway, I love Mitsuda; in fact, Xenogears was the first OST I ever bought. I remember I was driving home from a friends house and I had "Flight" stuck in my head (of course I didn't know that's what it was called...to me it was just that music that I used to let play for, like, an hour straight when I was playing Xenogears. You remember the Jukebox that let you play different tracks from the game...memories...). Once I got home I immediately went to Amazon and found that they actually released a soundtrack to A VIDEOGAME! lol!!! So that's how I got into VGM.
Enough rambling. Yeah, I'll definitely check out Duel Saga. I'll probably make that my next VGM purchase. Unless the Chrono Cross Arranged album comes out in July like the site says. That would be awesome! I think I'm gonna listen to some "An Cinniuint". I love that album.

As far as music goes, Shadow Hearts II is pure gold. While Mitsuda's contributions to this album were excellent, I discovered Yo****aka Hirota from these two albums (SH 1 & 2) and he's amazing! I especially love the ending vocal in SHII... oh my the violin!

Yeah, I really like Hirota's tracks from the Shadow Hearts OST. Has he done anything else...other than the two Shadow Hearts games, I mean?

That has a nice little background of Hirota. He seems to be following the same path as Mitsuda did. :p

Hirota actually created the sound effects for Chrono Trigger. So when you listen to CT and those anoying sound effects come on at certain tracks, just think, "This is the guy who did Shadow Hearts?"
Other than Shadow Hearts he hasn't done anything else, I think?

Thanks for the link Oniisan. Yeah, he's definitely following in Mitsuda's footsteps. Mitsuda did the sound effects for a game that Nobuo Uematsu composed for (Final Fantasy V), and then he composed for a game with Uematsu (Chrono Trigger). Hirota did the sound effects for a game Mitsuda composed for (Chrono Trigger), and then he composed for a game with Mitsuda (Shadow Hearts). Weird...

Skitch, you may want to track down Gun Hazard OST, a sub plot in the Front Mission Series. It has Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda, Junya Nakano and Masashi Hamauzu. Its much better than CT! Its that good.

Yeah, I own Gun Hazard already, although it's an EverAnime copy :(. When I first started getting into VGM I wasn't aware of the bootleg companies. Don't worry, I have only purchased legitimate OSTs since finding out about them.

Too bad. Chances of finding a Gun Hazard copy is very slim. You will have to pay around $60-$80 if you find one though.
