View Full Version : Question about Unreleased Soundtracks

Hello everyone,

Unlike the survey we are currently running on our website on specific soundtracks that were never released, we are trying to put together a list of soundtracks that may be popular in the U.S. and were never released at all.
Any games in the last 10 to 15 years that were released, but no official soundtracks were ever made.
If you have the American titles with the Japanese titles, this would make it easier for us.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what games were popular as some games were popular in the U.S. and not Japan.
If you have any ideas on which soundtracks may be in demand, please write in this forum or send me an email.

Thank you in advance for your time.
Kahori

Here are just some games that I thought had good music and didn't have a full CD made for them:

English Name - Japanese Name

Illusion of Gaia - Gaia Gensouki (for SNES/SFC, there is a Soul Blader CD and the third in the series also has a CD)

The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang - ? (for SNES/SFC, I do not know the name in Japanese. I know the company, Red, developed it.)

Robotrek - Slapstick (for SNES/SFC, it had some good music I thought)

Mario Party 1 (for Nintendo 64, Yasunori Mitsuda composed for it)

Bomberman 64 (2) (for Nintendo 64, also partially composed by YM)

Maybe some others, like Zelda II The Adventure of Link for NES. I should say that these are not what I think are popular CDs. Only the CDs I would want.

Certainly topping the list of recent games is Smash Borthers Melee (I don't count the concert album as too much is missing and it's arranged enough from the OST) and Metroid Prime. Ikagura too.

Older stuff - the Genesis/Megadrive Sonic games, Super Mario Kart (and Stunt Race FX, but that wasn't popular...and had a different J title).

And the number one game in my book that never got an CD release -- Lunar: Silver Star Story.

The problem with the US is that companies are lazy and they like to simply license existing songs to make up their soundtrack. It's pretty sad...It makes finding recent games with good music a bit harder.

I second Smash Brothers Melee...It is a shame we never saw a release for this. It was one of the few really must-buy Gamecube titles here in the US for awhile. Also, Mario Sunshine...There's two must-buys for any Nintendo fan right there.

Also, there's Guilty Gear Petite (Wonderswan) and Guilty Gear X for the Gameboy Advance...

Ah, the 2 Golden Sun games...and the new Gameboy Advance version of Lufia (Estpolis in Japan)...Sonic Advance (Gameboy Advance) 1 and 2 were among the top Gameboy Advance sellers in the US...

There were a bunch of Disney games by Capcom for the NES that sold really well way back when-Ducktales 1 and 2, Rescue Rangers 1 and 2, Talespin, Darkwing Duck. Great music. Also, Ninja Gaiden 1-3 were huge releases-part 1 had a soundtrack, but 2 and 3 didn't.

Yu-Gi-Oh games are mega-popular in the US right now. Pretty good music too. There are a few soundtracks out for them, but I don't think they cover the sheer amount of games released...

Phantasy Star 4 never had an official release (just an arranged album)...It's still a pretty respected RPG series in the US. In fact, I think the Phantasy Star Collections weren't even officially released-I think they were just promotional items. They're rare as anything...

The Megaman X (Rockman X) games are still big sellers when they're released. Megaman/Rockman is a very safe bet, because Capcom markets it at kids and a lot of older gamers remember the blue bomber.

The original Frogger remake became a greatest hits title here and had excellent music.

Spyro the Dragon and it's follow-up games (Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, Spyro: Year of the Dragon) had great atmospheric music. The little purple dragon is a recognizable icon. I just don't know if this game even came to Japan.

Faxanadu was one of the only RPG games we had for the NES for awhile. It gets mentioned a lot in old-school circles.

People still actually remember the Ys series, probably because it was one of the first notable CD games here..."Ys Book I and II" and "Ys III" came out...Ys IV never made it here.

I'm just brainstorming here...

Check into Capcom Game Music Vol. 1-3. They may have the Disney soundtracks on them.

Yu-Gi-Oh's target audience is kids. They won't be the ones buying soundtracks. I'd say with the pervasiveness of P2P fileshare programs like KaZaa, they are more likely to get illegal copies. I don't advise getting

Ys albums were already published in Japan. I believe Kahori is inquiring about soundtracks with NO Japanese and Western releases.

Faxandu is a Falcom game, published under the Dragon Slayer series, I think.

BTW, THIS TOPIC HAS BEEN MADE STICKY.

The music for the Disney Capcom games is not available-I can vouch for that.

I said "Ys Book I and II" and "Ys III" specifically-One could probably make cases for a lot of Turbo Duo CD games (Lords/Gate of Thunder come to mind) but those were the only two I know people remember. Faxandu music was never released-It's completely different from Xanandu, which I can confirm.

Heh, I'll disagree on Yu-Gi-Oh. For one thing, a lot of older anime fans are into the show/games-This probably means a lot of sales at anime conventions or a lot of anime online stores will want to stock them. Second, if a kid sees something like the soundtrack to a Yu-Gi-Oh game, he's going to be begging his parents to buy it for him. Plus, it's made by Konami-That gives plenty of regular VGM fans a reason to want it (like I said-some of the music is fantastic)

Oh yes, speaking of Konami, we can't forget the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games! Talk about a popular fad in the US that a lot of people remember-Every arcade I can think of had the two games released (and these were some pretty bad arcades). The first arcade game's music was never released on its' own (it was part of a compilation) and the second "Turtles in Time" had about half of its' arcade soundtrack released (plus, I don't think any of the Super Nintendo version made it to CD). Plus, the first and third NES games, plus "Tournement Fighters" never had releases.

He's talking about Super Smash Brothers Melee for GCN. Nintendo Power released an orchestra CD that they packaged with a recent issue, but it's extremely lacking. I don't really care about it.

::agrees with Joshua:: Lunar Silver Star Story is different than Lunar The Silver Star. Even if you own all four Lunatic Festas, you'd have just a handful of the many remade tracks on CD. Working Designs made a CD that was packaged with the remake, but that was only for North America, so I don't really count it.

I stand corrected. Please specify if we're talking about a TurboDuo Redbook Audio.

Faxandu is different from Xanadu, but I thought there was a release. This is a question to Falcom.

I don't agree with this. I believe those fans are more likely to buy cards and DVD/VHS than buy a soundtrack, especially one that is expensive. Nowadays, most people seem to feel there is much better value in spending a $30 CD for 3-4 episodes than it is to pay $35 for 1 hour of music.

Anime soundtracks do not sell in overwhleming numbers as compared to DVD/VHS or even other toys. I've worked at an anime convention where I walked through the dealers room. There was one table dedicated to music, but many people just looked, not bought.

I seem to recall reading that Lunar: The Silver Star had multiple composers, one of which was Mr. Iwadare. Lunar: Silver Star Story, on the other hand, only had Mr. Iwadare.

So, I think it's safe to say that most of the music in The Silver Star is different than that in Silver Star Story.

Was there really that much of a musical difference between Lunar: SSS and Lunar: The Silver Star?

There was an entirely new soundtrack, in fact. I seem to recall something about Iwadare not being allowed to use ANY music from the original, for some wierd reason.

As mentioned, there were Lunatic Festa CDs, which conatined drama tracks (bleh), songs (all available on the Lunar Songs CDs), and arranged music.
The CD that came with the US PSX game was all arranged as well.

There are a number of wonderful tracks that never got a CD release in any form.

List of Highly-Desired Unreleased Soundtracks (sorry, I don't know most of the Japanese names):

Breath of Fire I OST: Some of the better music in the series, yet it neve got a CD release - fairly popular MP3's though.

Robotrek (Slapstick) OST:

Phantasy Star 4 OST: (Only Genesis Phantasy Star game to not get the original soundtrack released as part of the Phantasy Star Sound Collection CD's)

Lufia the Legend Returns & Lufia OST: Ruins Chasers: While both are fairly recent, to my knowledge no CD is planned for either.

Beyond the Beyond OST: While the CD received an arranged album, an actual OST was never released.

I second Illusion of Gaia.

Also, the Dreamcast title Time Stalkers by Sega went without a soundtrack, but had tons of great music. I'd be quite happy if they decided to print an OST for that.

And don't forget the MEGAMAN X GAMES. Silly, stupidass Capcom.

Time Stalkers went under the name Climax Landers in Japan. There was a soundtrack release for that, but its print run was very low compared to other game music releases.

oooh, thank you. I had no idea.

Looking at the album on GMR, it looks like they abridged a lot of the music. Also, the print run is only 2 years, isn't the average 4 years?
Watch me download it now. =o

The dates on the back of a CD are not print-run dates. They are dates the retailer is required to sell at the retail price listed on the CD.

Print run is determined by number of CDs. Climax Landers had a small print run, because not many Japanese retailers seemed to have carried it.

Is this project still a possibility ? If yes, then I'd like to add Actraiser 2 by Yuzo Koshiro(SFC) and Tactics Ogre : The Knight of Lodis by Hitoshi Sakimoto & Masaharu Iwata(GBA) to the list of american released games that deserve soundtrack releases.

Certainly the best soundtrack of the PC Engine (in HuCards category ).

The second best in this category being Soldier Blade for me, marvelous shooter tunes. 8)

Yay! More 'unreleased soundtracks that deserve official releases' discs!

El Dorado Gate - The game was never translated... no USA release. I'd still like to hear the music, though.

Resident Evil (Gamecube) - I want soundtracks for both the Gamecube remake and Resident Evil 0. There's no sound test in either game.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - Yeah, I'm one of three people on earth that still loves the MvC2 music. It's too much trouble to rip the music from either the PS2 or Dreamcast version. So, just give me an OST release.

That's it for now.

TimeSplitters 2 would be so cool to have, I like that Western theme in the game.

A few games' soundtracks I would like to see:

Agreeing with the idea of Timesplitters 2 as well.

You know I never knew about that Perfect Dark: Dual CD soundtrack till it was too late. I really wish Nintendo would actually advertise their albums, but sadly it seems only Nintendo Power subscribers really have the chance to get em. Same with that Eternal Darkness soundtrack. I would of bought that, if Nintendo would let me.

A Megaman 8 soundtrack is a great idea, is there even a Megaman 7 album?

Nope, there's no soundtrack for Rockman 7, 8, or Rockman & Forte. Also without a soundtrack are every Rockman GB and GBC game plus the two Rockman Zero GBA games, the Network Transmission NGC game, Rockman Dash 2, Tron Bonne, and the Rockman FMV Adventure Game (PSX/SS). I guess the Rockman N1 Battle (or whatever it's called) for WSC and GBA also doesn't have a soundtrack. Finally, it should be interesting to see whether Rockman EXE 4 will have a soundtrack or not since the first three do.

Does anyone remember how good Capcoms Super Ghouls and Ghosts soundtrack was? Through the technology of an emulator I was once again reminded how good this music was for being on a SNES! This Capcom soundtrack is on my mind and wont soon leave. :!: does any one know if Maximos soundtrack is similar if not same? :?:

Another song i long for is is the temple theme from Adventues of Link NES
the music you hear when you walk in the first temple to fight Horse Head.
Does any one know what CD. that would be on? :?:

-One more- An arrange version of Crono Triggers music that is not the brink of time album. I was not too fond of Brink of Time. but maybe there are more versions of Crono Triggers music I am not aware of. :?:

The Maximo soundtrack has a lot of subtle arrangements of the classic G&G theme, but it's not that great overall. The second disc, the soundtrack to the original G&G, is better, IMO.

I think there's some Zelda II music on the second volume of Scitron's Famicom Music reprints, but I'm not sure if the particular piece you're looking for is included or not.

You can get other Chrono Trigger arranged music on the CT PSX soundtrack, OGC 5, Time & Space, and maybe Squaredance, though I'm not positive on that last one (though I know it has CC music).

Soundtracks I want to see:

1. Kishin Korinden ONI for the Super Famicom
2. Bakumatsu Korinden ONI 2 for the Super Famicom
3. Horai Gakuen no Bouken! - Tenkousei Scramble for the Super Famicom
4. Radical Dreamers for the SatellaView (Despite its similarity to Chrono Cross, I want one).
5. Solid Runner for the Super Famicom
6. Golden Sun 1/2 for the GBA

I would pay upwards of $100.00-$150.00 for each of those soundtracks (it's not like I haven't spent that much before....heh...) if they came to be. So my interest would definitely be piqued. Just letting you know...

The music for these games is beyond stellar and the fact that the gaming community failed to recognize this during the time of their release is beyond a true shame...

Though I suppose that could be said about a great many games. In any case, those are my picks.

I posted these in the Polls: Other Soundtracks section but it may be more fitting here:
Rockman Zero 2 Remastered Tracks (also include music-only tracks for the drama tracks)
SNES/SFC Rockman 7
SNES/SFC Rockman & Forte
GameBoy Rockman 1-5
Playstation arrangements to Rockman 1-6 (should be re-released in March as "Mega Man Anniversary Collection" for GCN & PS2)
GBA-Both Golden Sun games (soundtracks and orchestral arrangements)
GameBoy Zelda games (Link's Awakening and the Oracles of Ages & Seasons).
GCN-Super Mario Sunshine
GCN-Star Fox Adventures
GBA-Metroid Zero Mission
I'm looking forward to the Famicom 20th Anniversary CDs. Include Nintendo's Tetris on one of them (Not the Tengen version. Well, maybe both.)
I'd also like to see more complete soundtracks to various games such as N64 Paper Mario/Mario Story (which is missing dozens of songs). I was also disappointed with Rockman X1-6 which is missing songs and has SFX playing in some of the music tracks.

To the topic creator:

Please take this one to heart! But Spyro the Dragon, the entire series practically exists for the BENEFIT of the S/T!! Please find a way to bring any and ALL of the games from this series to a sound track format. Please!! There are so many fans of this series state side, especially since the newest game "A Heroe's Tail" was a definite redemption in many ways. Hell, even the GBA games have great s/t's, not many series "hit" on every platform.

I won't comment on whether or not these games were popular but they had excellent soundtracks which I'm shocked that to this day haven't had album releases. They are:

Mega Man: Network Transmission (Japanese title- Rockman EXE Transmission)

Jet Force Gemeni is one soundtrack I truly enjoyed, but I have to say right off the bat that the OST that I absolutely must see a release of is the Xenosaga II In Game Music....I was SO angry when they only released the FMV Music and not the In Game! More SFC Ishikawa goodness, as well as Hirokazu Ando!
Deus Ex

And if Super Sweep and/or Basiscape added arranged tracks as a bonus, I would pay a nice chunk of money for this!
Kirby Air Ride
The Nintendo Dream album only has 7 tracks, but the game rip has 64 tracks!
Megaman (Rockman) 7 & 8, and Rockman & Forte
Please, Capcom!
Ragnarok Online
Another soundtrack consisting of all tracks added to the game since the OST.
Ratchet & Clank series
Most importantly, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando.
The Ninja Warriors Again
Excellent SFC soundtrack by Hiroyuki Iwatsuki & N. Tate!

I agree with the Megaman missing ones and Ikaruga (especially for bonus tracks *goes crazy* ). Every Rockman has their soundtrack (individual or in a collection set), why not these ones as well ?!

Another one to add to my list:

Dragon Valor
An action-packed soundtrack from Namco composers Nobuhiro Ouchi and Ayako Yamaguchi.

I'd really like to see a Twilight Princess soundtrack. I'm surprised that one hasn't been released yet. Usually Legend of Zelda games get a soundtrack near the games release.

I managed to luckly buy the Double Dragon 2 remake cd they had up but it looks like that's only kind of music cd that ever came out for one of the original nes games. I am so glad they came out with Golden Axe just recently. It would be nice if they add the old Sonics from the Sega Genesis on the list of music cds comes out.

Yes. The original Sonic the hedgehog had amazing music. I remember when I was a little kid being mesmerized by it. not even playing the game, just staring at the background animation listening to the music....Then the Sonic sprite would begin to impatiently tap his foot. LOL!

Geniuses.

Looks like the main stream media is finally acknowledging people's interest in video game music: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23939801/

Now all I need is for Cocoebiz to start providing music cds from my list I posted on here ;-P.

Even lesser known orchestras are beginning their own concerts featuring game music.
Here's one I came across at Music 4 Games:

Megaman/Rockman Network Transmission should have an original soundtrack made for it. Personally I think the music to this game is great and I was disappointed to find (after a long search) that there was never an official soundtrack. :(

Interesting to note is that many of the websites that reviewed Network Transmission would almost always highlight the music, sometimes saying that it was the best part of the game.

Sadly Mp3 downloads are scarce and unless you own or have played the game, which apparently wasn't the most popular, you don't know what type of music you've been missing.

Please take this request under consideration.

Does anyone know what the Japanesse name for the game Landstalker is? I know they call it something different like they call Legend of Legaia just Legaia.

I was wondering why it so hard to get Japanesse to sell to people outside their country? Are international shipping that high?

I was browsing the Amazon.com from Japan and notice EVERY soundtrack I wanna buy is listed on there, but none of these people will sell it to me or anyone outside of Japan. Has anyone else come across this problem?

I also noticed VGM won't act as a third party purchaser for any of these items. It's a shame. Don't these people realize there's people outside of their country that are willing to pay money for these items....
