I recieved my copy of Mitsuda's new OST for Magic Pengal 2 and I love it. Many of the tracks really suprised me; they go off in directions I didn't expect. I really like this inbetween stage of listening to music, where I'm not yet really familiar with the songs yet. Inevitably, after a few more listens, I will know this OST inside and out like I know all of Mitsuda's music. Props to him for writing such wonderful stuff! If anyone else has recieved their copy I'd like to hear what you think. Oh, and the tote bag is really cool! Thanks Cocoebiz!
Here's my impressions: Mitsuda's new album (Hako no Niwa - Rakugaki Oukoku 2 OST) is pretty refreshing!
If you're stuck on a project and need a bit of a 'Creative Boost-Up' then this is what you need!
It really captures the 'Inventor's Spirit' and you feel like creating/building something just by listening to it, heh.
The soundscape is like you're wandering the french countryside and come across a little Magical Workshop, peering inside and seeing a bunch of tiny creatures inventing lots of wonderful gizmos and strange gadgets.
It's got mostly organic and acoustic sounds, so it's nice and "airy" to listen to.
There are some trademark Mitsuda stylings on just a couple tracks, which will remind you of Xenogears and Chrono Cross, but the majority of the songs have more in common with the Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon albums!
If you enjoyed the sounds in the Chocobo Dungeon series albums, this is a total no-brainer purchase: you'll love this!

I must interject and say that the soundtracks to Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon 1 and 2 have absolutely nothing to do with each other musically. Hamauzu's composition is always on the opposite end of the tonal spectrum in relation to other composers, especially the four who worked on CMD2. So, in other words, I think Mitsuda's new album is more similar to CMD2 and has very little in common with CMD1. Actually, I wouldn't really compare it to that series in the first place...there are closer soundtracks by far...but that's just me.

I'm a very big Mitsuda fan. I was really starting to get disappointed about the fact that he hadn't worked on anything since Xenosaga, but that has changed now with that soundtrack. While I haven't purchased it yet (which I plan to), the samples I've heard thus far are very promising. I can hear some new styles as well as the styles that have made him famous. While this isn't a huge, muti-disc composition like some of his past efforts, I'm still really excited about it and can't wait to get knee-deep in it.
